Visiting the Plataforma Solar de Almería

Almeria (Spain), 26 May 2025

Today, Dr. Isabel Oller introduced us to some of the most advanced technologies for purifying water with the aid of solar light. During our visit, she detailed the innovative methods that harness solar energy to effectively eliminate contaminants from water sources, making it safe for disposal or consumption. One of the key technologies discussed was the use of photocatalytic processes, where specific materials are activated by sunlight to initiate chemical reactions that break down harmful pollutants. Dr. Oller explained how these photocatalytic systems can be integrated into various water treatment setups, including decentralized systems that can be used in remote areas lacking access to clean water. She highlighted the importance of these technologies in addressing global water scarcity issues, especially in regions where traditional water purification methods are either too costly or logistically challenging. Furthermore, she elaborated on the role of solar distillation, a method that utilizes solar energy to evaporate water, leaving impurities behind, and then condenses the vapor back into liquid form. This visit stressed how the integration of solar-powered water purification technologies represents a promising step forward in the quest for sustainable solutions to global water challenges.
